The POWERHOUSE Arena sits just blocks from the beautiful Brooklyn waterfront, and while we moved merchandise in preparation for the hurricane’s 3’-11’ surges predicted by the expert meteorologists, we were not prepared for a 14’ rise in water level, which resulted in an inundation of 28” throughout our 5000 sf main floor. Tubs of kids books, event copies, stationery and totes were lifted off the Arena steps and sunk; cabinets bobbed in the rushing onslaught; within 20 minutes the Arena was flooded and then emptied, breaking out the front door glass window and taking more than a few items along the way.

There’s so much to be said about this hurricane, and the devastation it’s wrought. If you haven’t already donated to the Red Cross & you can, please do so. And if you have the means, please consider donating to powerHouse’s relief fund. They’re an amazing store & event space and have always been there for us. Now it’s time for us to be there for them.

NYC-ers, also write in November 17th on your calendars for the #SandyHatesBooks fundraiser. If their book events are any indication, there’s no world in which this won’t be fantastic.

Does that say “Signed Chabon” in that pile of water-damaged books??!? *weeps*

Sometimes a little loss that like that really lands and becomes the doorway through which you finally begin to understand an event of serious magnitude.
